Trailer: Obvious Child (2014)

Obvious Child

So I’ve got an inkling that Jenny Slate will be our next queen of comedy.

Jenny Slate stars in the upcoming romantic comedy Obvious Child, which is written and directed by Gillian Robespierre. It tells the story of Donna Stern (Slate), a Brooklyn comedian who gets dumped and fired on one Valentine’s Day. She has a one-night stand with the adorable Max (Jake Lacy) that same Valentine’s Day which leads to a — surprise! — pregnancy.

So far, this sounds like a pretty typical romantic comedy (Knocked Up, anyone?)… but let’s throw abortion into the mix. Now that’s new. It’s not often that abortion or reproductive rights take center stage in comedies. According to Wikipedia, there are only 31 films about Abortion — including Obvious Child. However, from what I see from the trailer, the film doesn’t look like an advocacy film. It seems like abortion will be treated as a normal (although difficult) choice for young women. It will be interesting to see how this plays out.

Anyhow, I am very happy to see Jenny Slate in a starring role. The girl is hilarious! I’ve enjoyed her work guest starring in some of my favourite shows, such as Parks & Recreation, Girls, Hello Ladies, and House of Lies. She was also a cast member on Saturday Night Live from 2009 to 2010. She’s proven to be great at playing the crazy bitch (or just a bitch); I’m looking forward to her playing a likable leading lady. If she can pull this off, I really do have a feeling she’ll join the likes of Tina Fey, Amy Poehler, Kristen Wiig, and Maya Rudolph in comedy royalty.

And do you guys recognize the leading man in Obvious Child? That’s Pete “Plop” Miller from the ninth and final season of The Office! I never really liked him on that show because I felt like he was trying to replace Jim (I realize that this is irrational), but I think he can pull off this role. Like I said earlier, he’s adorable!

The film, which comes out this summer on June 6th, will also star the incomparable David Cross (Arrested Development) and wonderful Gaby Hoffman (Now and Then, Veronica Mars movie).
